Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are and always have been, an integral part of Plymouth Town Government. It is volunteers, elected or appointed, who serve on committees that give of their time and talents and make policies that shape the future of the Town.
Select Board Appointed Positions

The following Select Board-appointed boards and committees currently have vacancies; apply before July 18, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. The Select Board will consider appointments at the July 25, 2023 meeting at 6:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 26 Court Street.
Building Committee (1 Vacancy, Citizen At-Large): Upon the request of the Town Manager or a Department Head, the Building Committee shall meet with various Town departments from time to time to determine the need for additions or renovations to any existing buildings or facilities, for the construction of new buildings or facilities or for the demolition or disposal of existing buildings. The Committee shall report its recommendations to the Select Board and the Representative Town Meeting and the School Committee when applicable. Whenever this work is authorized by the Representative Town Meeting, the Building Committee shall be responsible for the oversight of all work relating thereto, including site planning, preliminary architectural drawings, final plans, and the oversight of all construction. The Building Committee typically meets on either the second Thursday of the month, at 6:30 p.m.
Cable Advisory Committee (2 Vacant Seats): The Cable Advisory Committee is responsible for reviewing complaints, suggestions, and issues raised relative to the cable system, the licensee, and the services provided, and to make recommendations to the Select Board on such matters. The Committee meets on an as-needed basis and will reconvene in August/September 2023.
Land Use & Acquisition Committee (Multiple Positions Available): The Land Use & Acquisition Committee research and maintains a current inventory of all properties of interest, with a focus on parcels of significant size and parcels of any size facing the loss of Chapter 61 protection and/or parcels of potential value to the Town. The Committee meets on an as-needed basis.
Natural Resources & Coastal Beaches Committee (1 Vacant Seat - Neighbor of Morton Park): The Natural Resources & Coastal Beaches Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Select Board on matters relating to the Town’s coastal and freshwater wetlands, barrier beaches, coastal plain ponds, and conservation properties that have beaches/waterfront. The Committee generally meets once or twice a month, depending on associated projects and topics.
Visitor Services Board (1 Vacant Seat): The Visitor Services Board (VSB) of Plymouth, Massachusetts serves as an advisory board to the Town Manager and the Select Board. The seven-member board is charged with the management of the Town Promotion (tourism) Fund, which is funded wholly by a percentage of the local / hotel rooms' tax. The Visitor Services Board awards funds and grants for promotional and marketing materials, information delivery, events, activities, and infrastructure betterment in an effort to maximize the quality of Plymouth's tourism industry for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.
Water Conservation Committee (2 Vacant Seats): The Water Conservation Committee works in close collaboration with the Plymouth Water Division and Public Works Department to advocate, promote, educate, and bring awareness to Plymouth officials, employees, residents, and businesses on the importance of Water Conservation and how everyone plays an important role. Currently, the Water Conservation Committee is in a reformation period and the Committee as a whole will determine the best dates and times to meet moving forward.
Zoning Board of Appeals (1 Vacant Alternate Seat): The Zoning By-laws provide for certain building requirements, and it is the role of the Board of Appeals to determine whether relief from these regulations is warranted in certain situations. To that end, the Board of Appeals hears and makes decisions on applications for alteration or extension of a pre-existing, non-conforming structure or lot; appeals of the decisions of the Building Inspector; comprehensive Permits; special permits for the reconstruction; special permits, and variances from zoning regulations. The Zoning Board of Appeals Alternate members are able to vote in the case of the absence, inability to act, or unwillingness to act because of a conflict of interest on the part of a member of the Board. The Zoning Board of Appeals currently meets on the first and third Monday of the month, at 7:00 p.m.
Residents are also able to submit a letter of interest, outlining the rationale as to why they would like to be appointed. Charter Review Committee
A Charter Review Appointment Committee has been formed to appoint nine (9)-members, plus 2 alternates to a Charter Review Committee. The Appointment Committee will review letters of interest with criteria such as: one member from the most recent Charter Commission and will also focus on appointing not more than one member per precinct.
The second meeting of the Appointment Committee is Monday, July 10, 2023, @ 6:00 p.m., at Town Hall, Great Hall, 26 Court Street, when letters of interest will be reviewed and/or applicant interviews conducted and voted on. If needed a 3rd meeting of the Appointment Committee will be scheduled for Monday, July 31, 2023, @ 6:00 p.m.

The deadline to submit your letter of interest is Friday, July 7, 2023, at 12:00 p.m.
Planning Board Appointed Positions
The Planning Board seeks citizens interested in serving on the permanent Cedarville, Plymouth Center, and West Plymouth Steering Committees. The Steering Committees are charged with implementing the various Village Master Plans and advocating for community needs within each village. The Steering Committees typically meet once a month.
The Planning Board seeks citizens interested in serving as a Planning Board Alternate. The alternate would attend Planning Board meetings and fill in as necessary. The term for this appointment is one year. The Planning Board meets on Wednesday evenings.
